Based on William Carey’s rigorously self-taught Philology they decided to embark on a major translation project.
‘’We have it our power in the space of about 15 years to have the word of god translated and printed in all the languages of the East’’ William Carey 1804
They gathered together Indian linguist led by Ram Ram Boshu, which became the powerhouse for translation.
Translation was also from Indian into English with the support of Governor Wellesley. He gave a salary of 300 Rupees a month to translate the most important Sanskrit books.
The printing required 700 separate punches to meet the orthography of the Indian Scripts the letter foundry of Serampore was the chief foundry in India for the next 50 years.
Even though on March 11th 1812 the foundry and printing press burnt down completely. Within 50 days subscriptions in India and England raised £10000. They were rebuilt within 6 months.
Ironically, the most secular module of the curriculum gave rise to great difficulties with the more narrow minded Baptist Mission Society in England, and the Serampore these were cut off by them in 1827.
